Creating Your Own Web Page with Netscape Composer
To create your own Web page with Netscape Composer, you don't have
to understand HTML. It is helpful to have an outline of your page
which includes format, content, graphics, and links. To use the following
instructions, you may wish to print out this file to follow along.

Creating the Page
-
Open Netscape Communicator
-
Choose FILE, NEW, BLANK PAGE.
-
To give a title to the sample page: Choose FORMAT, puis PAGE COLORS AND
PROPERTIES and enter the title Sample Web Page.
-
To change the colors, click on FORMAT, PAGE COLORS AND PROPERTIES, COLORS
AND BACKGROUND and choose other colors for LINK TEXT, FOLLOWED LINKS and
BACKGROUND. Click OK.
-
To create a title, click on the arrow next to the Normal window and choose
HEADING 1. Enter Sample Web Page Title.
-
Hit ENTER and check that NORMAL has reappeared in the window. (If
not click on NORMAL) Type at least two paragraphs, hitting ENTER after
each.
-
You can prepare a text with accents by using a word processing software
and cutting and pasting into the editor.
-
If you have a French keyboard, you can use it for the accents.
-
For some letters, you can use enter accented characters with their ASCII
codes. To do this, press ALT and enter the code which you can find
in your computer manual, using the numeric keypad (for example, é
= ALT+130).
-
To create a sub-title, click on the arrow and choose HEADING 2. Enter Sample
Page Sub-Title. Hit ENTER and check that NORMAL reappears in the window.
(If not, click on NORMAL.)
-
Type Here is a list of my favorite links. Hit ENTER.
-
To create a list, click on the icon for a bulleted list. A bullet
will appear. Since this will be a list of links, click on the LINK
icon. (The editor will ask you to save the file if you have not already
done so, and you can name it whatever you like and save it to diskette
or to the hard drive.) In the dialogue box which appears ENTER TEXT
TO DISPLAY FOR NEW LINK asks you to type the text which will appear underlined
or in color for the link. We will put AATF Homepage.
Next enter the URL in the window LINK TO A PAGE LOCATION OR LOCATION FILE,
and we will put http://aatf.utsa.edu/ (You can also copy and
paste a URL from a bookmark list, for example. You can use the
CHOOSE FILE to select a file on diskette, and in the lower window, you
will find a list of internal links on that page. Finally you can
put Netscape Communicator and Composer windows side by side and drag
the URL by clicking on the little icon to the left of the LOCATION window.).
Click on OK. After each element in the list, hit ENTER.
-
Repeat the procedure for the following links (the bullet will appear to
indicate that it's a list):
-
The Paris Pages: http://www.paris.org/
-
List of Web servers in France: http://www.urec.fr/
-
Here I will put an internal link to another section of this same page.
#internal
-
Hit ENTER after the last element, then click on the LIST icon to end the
list. (You can also type the list first, select the entire list,
and then click on the LIST icon.)

We are going to put a horizontal bar here by clicking on the icon.
Hit ENTER.

diskette.) Check that the box marked LEAVE IMAGE AT ORIGINAL LOCATION
is checked. (If you are not on line, you will not see the image.)
If you are including images that you find on the Web, you should not save
them without permission; rather make a link. If the image is large,
you can alter its size by returning to the IMAGE dialogue box. We
are going to enlarge the image. Click on the IMAGE icon and double
the dimensions of the image. Click on OK.
-
We can make the image a link which will return us to the first page of
this site. Highlight the image and click on the LINK icon. Under
LINK SOURCE, type ./begin.html and click on OK.
-
We can include a recorded sound message here. You simply link to

icon. Choose or enter the file named welcome.wav. Click OK.
-
We are going to put another horizontal bar here by clicking on the BAR

the Web with their definitions. Type the following text, putting
each acronym and each definition on a separate line: URL, Uniform Resource

each acronym and click in the NORMAL window on NORMAL on DESCRIPTION TITLE.
Choose each defintion and click on DESCRIPTION TEXT. You can also
highlight each capital letter and underline it by clickon on FORMAT, STYLE,
UNDERLINE.
-
Now we are going to create an internal link called "internal." Begin by
creating a sub-title using HEADING 3 and typing Sub-title Internal Link.

the mouse and click on the TARGET icon. Put internal
in
the dialogue box which appears.

title. Then, click on each cell and enter France, Belgium, Switzerland,
Quebec, Senegal, Morocco, Togo, Tahiti.
-
You can put links in the cells. With the mouse, highlight "France,"
then click on the LINK icon. In the LINK TO window, enter http://www.france.diplomatie.fr/
to create a link to the page of the Ministère des Affaires Etrangères.
-
Replace the cursor at the end of the table and type Now, of course,
I will put the necessary information to contact me as well as the dates
of creation and last update. Hit ENTER.
-
Click on the LINK icon and for LINK SOURCE enter your name, for LINK TO,
enter mailto: followed by your e-mail address. Click OK.
Hit ENTER.

Return to the beginning of the document. Highlight the title. Click
on the JUSTIFICATION icon to center it.
-
Finally, we will make the title blink and change its color. The title
should still be highlighted. Click on FORMAT, STYLE, BLINKING. (The
title will not blink in the browser.) Then click on COLOR and select a
color. Click OK.
-
Save the file by clicking on the SAVE icon or by clicking on FILE, then
SAVE AS.
-
Click on the PREVIEW icon to view the sample page. It should resemble
this
