<>Katie South (PhD,
archaeology) Katie has
had an eventful year! She has
successfully completed her master’s degree with a thesis entitled
“Monkeying
Around the Maya Region: A Four-Field Look at Primate Iconography and
the Maya”
and is now in the PhD program at SIUC.
She is thrilled to have her thesis finished and plans to
publish two articles
about her results in the near future.
She returned to Oaxaca, Mexico this past
summer to
work with Dr. Balkansky on the Tayata Project.
She and Nate Meissner analyzed the figurines that have
been excavated
from the site in previous field seasons.
They will present a preliminary summary of their results
at the annual
meeting for the SAA in Puerto Rico this spring. Following this, they plan to publish an
article about the figurines that will be co-written with Dr. Balkansky. In the meantime, Katie is a teaching
assistant in the department, is still making her friends call her
“Master
Katie,” and is the president of the Anthropology Graduate Student
Association. >
