Southern Illinois Dual Language Coalition

The mission of the Southern Illinois Dual Language Coalition is to promote high quality educational opportunities for all children in southern Illinois by developing dual language (also called two-way bilingual and two-way immersion) programs, to create opportunities for:

  • English-speaking children to learn a foreign language (such as Spanish) fluently through immersion,
  • English language learners to learn English fluently as well as maintain their family language,
  • members of Latino and other ethnic groups to revive and maintain their family's language and culture through heritage language immersion,
  • all children to meet or exceed state academic standards and become bilingual, and
  • children and families in southern Illinois to enjoy positive cross-cultural contact, understanding, and appreciation.
