The University Writing Handbook

writing handbook cover

We take writing seriously. Across the entire campus. Across all curricula.

In fact, in 1998 that campus adopted a single writing handbook that our students could use as a reference for all of their writing assignments through all of their courses at SIUC. The book is The Little, Brown Compact Handbook (third edition), by Jane Aaron (cover pictured left). The handbook was reprinted in June, 1998. The most recent printing of the book can be readily identified by a large maroon stripe in the upper right corner containing the notice: "Includes 1998 MLA Guidelines."

The June, 1998, printing of the third edition comes with the free, shrink-wrapped supplement, Researching Online, whose cover is pictured at right.

In addition to Researching Online, free software ("Writer's Workshop") may be downloaded from the Web by all Southern Illinois University Carbondale students, faculty and staff. The software contains a hypertext version of the entire handbook, and other "nuggets."
