Welcome.
We're
glad that you're interested
in studying here at SIUC. In today's increasingly
interconnected world, knowledge of foreign languages
and foreign
cultures is more important than ever. We teach
eight different foreign languages at SIUC,
but if you study with us you won't only learn
a foreign language, you'll learn about
a foreign
culture: literature, art, cinema, and the rest.
That's why we're called the Department of Foreign
Languages and Literatures.
We
offer majors and minors in Classics (Latin
or Greek), French, German,
and Spanish,
minors in Chinese and Japanese,
and classes in American
Sign Language (ASL). We also
have an innovative program in Foreign
Language and International Trade,
which combines coursework in any of the modern
languages with classes in business. In addition
to these undergraduate programs, we offer a MA Program in French or Spanish.
The
Department has a number of scholarships
and awards available, both for
incoming and continuing students. Particularly
attractive for incoming students is our Buschek
award of $1000, which is
renewable for up to four years. Those interested
in German should also be aware of the Helmut
and Mary Liedloff Award, which provides tuition
waivers to German majors.

Faner Hall
The department is housed toward the south end
of Faner Hall, home to most of the programs in
liberal arts at SIUC (and conveniently located
next to the Student Center).
