Introduction to Forestry

Course Objective:   This course is disgned to: 1. Introduce you to all of the faculty members in the Department of Forestry at SIUC, 2. Educate you on the multiple-use aspects in the overall field of forestry, 3. Inform you of management policies and trends on local, national, & international levels, 4. Develop an understanding of forest ecosystem managment, 5. Help you to understand the linkage and interrelationahip of forestry to other disciplines of natural and social sciences.

Course Format:   The lectures and presentations for each class session will be conducted individual faculty members of the forestry department.  Each lecturer will present information regarding their specific sub-discipline within the overall field of forestry.  They7 will be providing information from  both their teaching and research experiences.  The information provided during lecture will be supplemented with weekly reading assignments from the text.  Attendance is mandatory and will be factored into the final grade.  No absence will be excused except those approved by the course instructor.

Grading:  The majority of the grade from this class will be deterimined by your performance on two hourly exams and a comprehensive final.  Exams will consist of lecture material and selection from assigned readings.  A smaller portion of your grade will be determined based on  your class attendance.  At the beginning of each class, an attendance sheet will be circultaed and it will be your responsibility to place your name on the attendance sheet.  If you fail to sign the attendance sheet you will be counted as absent.

Grading Scale:
A = 450 - 500 pts ( 90 - 100 %)
B = 400 - 499 pts  (80 - 89 %)
C = 350 - 399 pts  (70 - 79%)
D = 300 - 349 pts  (60 - 69%)
F = < 300 pts ( < 60%)
