Linguistics Student Association
Minutes for October 4, 2000
The regular business meeting was called to order at
12:12p.m. President Micky Mayes was presiding.
New Business: Next meeting is November
8, 2000 (Wednesday 12:00 in Thebes Rm of Student Center). Be
prepared to vote on the Constitution (LSA). Get in touch with Micky
if you want a copy of the present one. A motion was passed to let Micky
Mayes use part of our allotted webpage programming space (we are not
using it) for his thesis project.
President: The AAAL conference is
early next year (Feb or March?). Talk of a pre-conference meeting in
February with Dr. Angelis and Tom Leverett is possible. Details not
known.
Vice President: Various avenues were
discussed to acquire funds in which LSA is eligible.
Treasurer: LSA current balance is
$437.71 in savings and checking. LSA faculty advisor might be needed
to help acquire USG funds.
Fund Raising: We need ideas! The car
wash has been nixed due to the imminent colder weather.
GPSC: No report.
Social: A potluck picnic at Turley
Park will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday October 21, 2000. It is
free to al LSA dues-paid members; the cost is $1 for non dues-paid members.
Anyone can come, all are invited (bring something). Please SIGN UP to
bring a dish, utensils/paperware/drinks, etc… on the door of
the mailroom by the LSA events calendar. There is no alcohol permitted.
We’ll have lots of fun playing volleyball, frisbee, even softball,
so mark your calendar!!!! Any other ideas call Jill at 529-1071. SPREAD
THE WORD!!
ISC: There is a fall soccer tournament
presently. A schedule of semester events to be set up Oct. 19. An ethnic
night is supposedly coming up (date?).
CESL: No report.
Linguistics Curriculum: Meetings will
be first Monday of every month, Usha Lakshmanan is the Chair. Issues
and concerns about course numbers will be discussed at next meeting.
Web master: No report, visit the site

Lecture Series: There is a meeting
Oct. 12 at 1:00 with Nelly to discuss the series. Office #: 4335. There
is an interest in getting a ‘bigname’ linguistics person
here to speak, possibly Stephen Pinker.
