THEA 101 Theater Insight (University Core Curriculum - 3 Credit hours)
Through lectures, projects, discussions, text readings and written
critiques, students examine how plays are written and produced and
how these plays reflects the cultures of the people that produce them.
THEA 203 Introduction to Voice and Movement (3 Credit hours)
Fundamentals of vocal production and movement for the stage; breathing,
phonation, kinesthetic awareness, warm-up, use of space and introduction
to the International Phonetic Alphabet.
THEA 205 Stage Make-up (2 Credit hours)
General survey covering the design and application of make-up for
the stage, including youth, middle and old age, texture, color,
special effects, wigs and latex.
THEA 217 Acting (3 Credit hours)
Prepares the actor’s basic instrument through basic acting
technique; concentration/relaxation exercises and improvisations.
The course objective is the discovery of the actor’s inner
resources. Contemporary American plays are studied from the actor’s
point of view.
THEA 218a Beginning Stagecraft (3 Credit hours)
Fundamentals of scenic construction and stage rigging include basic
tools, equipment and an introduction to scenic design. This class
has a practical laboratory requirement of 45 hours.
THEA 218b Beginning Stagecraft (3 Credit hours)
Fundamentals of stage lighting include instrument handling, focussing,
basic electrical theory and an introduction to lighting design.
This class has a practical laboratory requirement of 45 hours.
THEA 218c Beginning Stagecraft (3 Credit hours)
Fundamentals of stage costume construction and introduction to costume
design. This class has a practical laboratory requirement of 45
hours.
THEA 260 Internship (1 – 15 Credit hours)
An outside departmental internship, which is related to the Theater
Major program, but is not part of a regular instructional course.
Written reports are required from the student and the outside supervisor.
Mandatory pass/fail.

Only Theater major students
Undergraduate advisor and curriculum committee must approve written
proposals prior to internship.
THEA 300 Theater Practicum (1 Credit hour per semester – maximum
4)
Offers students an opportunity to increase their skills in stagecraft,
stage lighting, and costume by working on departmental productions.
Prerequisites: THEA 203 & THEA 217.
THEA 303a Movement for the actor (3 Credit hours)
Intermediate studies in stage movement.
Prerequisites: THAE 203 & THEA 217.
THEA 303b Voice for the actor(3 Credit hours)
Intermediate studies in stage voice, IPA, standard speech, text
analysis, scansions, and cold readings.
Prerequisite: THAE 203.
THEA 309 Drafting for the theater (3 Credit hours)
Development of the student’s skill in scenographic techniques
including ground plans, sections, elevations, and detailed construction
drawings.
Prerequisite: THEA 218a or concurrent enrollment.
THEA 311a Play analysis (3 Credit hours)
Development of the student’s basic skills in play analysis
and the application of these skills to a variety of dramatic forms
through class discussions and written assignments. Satisfies CoLA’s
Writing-across-the-Curriculum requirement for Theater Majors.
Prerequisite: THEA 101 or one course in dramatic literature.
THEA311b Playwriting Workshop for Undergraduates (3 – 6 Credit
hours)
Practical experience in producing original plays combined with class
discussions and critiques. Actors, designers and technicians attend
class sessions, as well as rehearsals and work calls and have their
work progressively evaluated. Workshop productions are stated in
cooperation with THEA 511.
Prerequisites: audition or interview.
THEA 317a Intermediate Acting (3 Credit hours)
The study and application of Stanislavskian-based techniques to
the acting process. Course work includes scene and monologue work.
Prerequisite: THEA 217, non-majors must audition.
THEA 317b Intermediate Acting (3 Credit hours)
The study and application of European realism in the development
of the actor’s process.
Prerequisite: THEA 317a
THEA 322 SIU Summer Theater (3 – maximum 12 Credit hours)
Practical experience for Theater Majors and Minors in performing
or technical work in summer stock play production.
Prerequisites: audition or consent of instructor.
THEA 350 Topical Seminar (3 credit hours per topic, maximum 3 topics)
An intensive examination and application of selected areas of interest.
Topics will vary and may include such areas as stage management,
audition and interview, or current political theater.

THEA 390 Independent Study (3 – 6 Credit hours)
Independent work on selected problems in academia or a blend of
academia and creative research. A maximum of three hours may be
taken for a single project and a cumulative maximum of six hourd
may count towards the degree.

Practicum for support of major department productions in all areas.

THEA 401 Stage Management (2 Credit hours)
The study of the theories and skills required to successfully stage-manage
a theater production.
Prerequisites: THEA 217, THEA 218a and consent of instructor.
THEA 402a Play Directing (3 Credit hours)
Introduction to directing. The history of the director, the evaluation
of the director into a position of predominance in modern theater
hierarchy. The function of the director, and the examination of
theoretical viewpoint. Textual analysis, establishing groundwork
for the director’s approach to production.

The principles of play direction including play selection, analysis
and patterning of auditory and visual elements of production. Directing

THEA 404 Theater Management (3 Credit Hours)
Discussion of legal and financial aspects concerning the professional
and community theaters of the United States. Consideration of and
practice in managerial activities of an educational theater including
administration, purchasing, and accounting practices, direct sales,
publicity, promotion and public relations.
THEA 406 Properties and Crafts for the Stage (3 Credit hours)
Studio work in traditional and non-traditional crafts for theatrical
events, including life masks, upholstery, puppetry, stage furniture
and special effects.
Prerequisites: THEA 218 or consent of instructor.
THEA 407 Scene Design (3 Credit hours)
The theory and practice of the technical and artistic aspects of
scene design.
Prerequisites: THEA 218a, THEA 309, THEA 409 or consent of instructor.
THEA 408 Model Making (3 Credit hours)
Craft of scenic model making for the stage and other dramatic media.
Prerequisite: THEA 218a or consent of instructor.
THEA 409a Scene Painting (3 Credit hours)
Studio work in lining, paneling, tromp l’oeil ornament and
drapery.
Prerequisites: THEA 218a or consent of instructor.
THEA 409b Advanced Scene Painting (3 Credit hours)
Advanced studio work in scene painting, including dye painting,
transparencies, color mixing, and mural work.
Prerequisites: THEA 409a or consent of instructor.
THEA 410 Children’s Theater (9 Credit hours)
Theory and practice in performing theater for children. Class activities
include lectures on various aspects of productions well as producing
a touring children’s’ play for local area schools.
Prerequisite: audition or interview.
THEA 411a Playwriting—The short play (3 Credit hours)
Principles of dramatic structure as they apply to the writing of
a short play… through class discussion, analysis of short
plays, and the writing of specific projects and exercises, students
will write at least 2 drafts of 20 – 30 minute complete plays.
Individual plays may be considered for production in the theater’s
program for new plays.
Prerequisite: 311a for Theater Majors, or consent of instructor
THEA 411b Playwriting—The Full-Length Play (3 Credit hours)
Principles of dramatic literature as they apply to the writing of
a full-length (90-120 minute) play. Typical well-made patterns are
studied, along with experimental forms and variations. Some discussion
of marketing plays is included.
Prerequisite: THEA 411a or its equivalent or consent of instructor.
THEA 414 Costume Design (3 Credit hours)
History of western costume from Greek to Renaissance and its adaptation
to stage use. Theory and practical application of design and color.
Prerequisite: THEA 218c or graduate standing.
THEA 417 Advanced Acting (3 Credit hours per semester, maximum
2 semesters)
Utilization of the actor’s process in the performance of various
theories and styles of acting. May be repeated once for credit.
Prerequisite: THEA 317b.
THEA 418 Introduction to Lighting Design (3 Credit hours)
Investigation of stage lighting design, theory and professional
practice. Special attention to color theory and its application
to stage lighting. Four hours lecture/laboratory.
Prerequisite: THEA 218b, THEA 309, graduate standing, or consent
of instructor.
THEA 419 Advanced Stagecraft (3 Credit hours)
Advanced study of principles and procedures of scenic construction
and stage rigging. Includes scene shop organization, materials,
and specialized stage equipment; preparation for professional technical
direction. Lecture and laboratory to be arranged.
Prerequisite: THEA 218a, THEA 218b, THEA309, THEA 407, or graduate
standing.
THEA 420 Senior Seminar (2 Credit hours)
Students are provided an opportunity to integrate their previous
training in theater and to assess it. Students are exposed to information
skills and strategies necessary for survival in the professional
world. Mandatory Pass/Fail. Not for graduate credit.
Prerequisite: consent of department and concurrent enrollment in
THEA 421.
THEA 421 Senior Project (1 Credit hour)
Preparation of any of the following based on the student’s
area of interest: a portfolio, script, critical research paper,
design, acting recital or direction of a short play. Projects are
chosen and prepared under the supervision of a theater faculty member.
Mandatory Pass/Fail. Not for graduate credit.
Prerequisite: consent of department and concurrent enrollment in
THEA 420.
THEA 450 Topical Seminar (3 – 9 Credit hours)
An intensive examination and application of selected areas of interest.
Topics will vary and may include such areas as stage management,
audition and interview, current political theater.

THEA 454 American Theater (3 Credit hours)
The development of American theater from colonial times to the present.
Includes a study of the American musical theater from preminstrels
