SIUC-N Intensive English Program (IEP)

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum of the SIUC-N Intensive English Program (IEP) is designed to prepare students for university-level academic English. Students entering the program are tested to determine their overall English language proficiency. This testing is used for placement in the intensive English classes at the appropriate levels. Placement in the correct level for each student assures the opportunity for success at that level and a more rapid acquisition of the English language.

The time devoted to studying English depends on the student's initial proficiency, subsequent work, and attendance. Students who attend class every day, do all homework assignments, and study for exams can expect to finish the IEP in a minimal amount of time.

Intensive English Program Levels and Courses

Skill areas within the Intensive English Program consist of listening, speaking, grammar, writing, and reading. Each skill has five levels. Upon completion of the highest level, the student is deemed ready for university core curriculum work in the Liberal Arts program. Assignment to levels of each skill is based on the TOEFL score for that skill and the previous course work passed in the IEP.

Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each class period is 50 minutes. The average class size is 20 students. At the beginning of each term, class schedules are posted. Students are expected to check the schedule and purchase their books before the first day of classes.

General English Course

These courses provide students with a basic understanding of English structure in reading and writing, as well as the basic listening and speaking skills necessary to begin communicating.

Intermediate Course

The Intermediate level courses reinforce and expand upon the language skills developed in the General English level. Topics and vocabulary used in reading, writing, and listening become more academic.

High Intermediate Course

Students in these courses begin to use their language skills as they would in a university setting. For example, students take notes on lectures, summarize and discuss readings, and argue their ideas both orally and in writing.

Advanced Course

Work at this level uses authentic university text materials and lectures to prepare students for university core curriculum courses. Students work on vocabulary, listening, reading and writing skills using content-based materials and projects.

English for Acedemic Purposes Course

This highest level of the Intensive English Program involves extensive reading, writing, speaking, and listening on specific topics. Students in this level learn the mechanics of writing research papers. In addition, students in this level may be concurrently assigned to their first university Core Curriculum class.

Resources

In addition to classes, the following facilities are available to provide students with materials for English study and practice:

Computer Lab

This lab is open each day from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, in Room 111. The computer lab has special materials for additional reading, listening, grammar, writing, typing, and TOEFL skills practice.

Library

The library has over 18,000 books in English. Many of these are especially useful for language learners, including graded readers, tapes, videos, music, and TOEFL preparation excercises. There are also English language newspapers and magazines available.
