Director, Center for Integrated Research in Cognitive and Neural Sciences
POSITION AND APPOINTMENT
Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) invites applications for the directorship of the newly established Center for Integrated Research in Cognitive and Neural Sciences (CIR-CNS). The successful candidate will engage in 50% time as Director of the CIR-CNS reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Dean, and 50% time as Professor or Associate Professor in his or her affiliated department. This is a continuing, twelve-month, state-supported, tenure-track position beginning July 1, 2008. The affiliated department will be compatible with the candidate's training and expertise and may include the Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, or Physiology in the SIU School of Medicine (administratively part of SIUC); the Department of Psychology in the SIUC College of Liberal Arts; or the Rehabilitation Institute in the SIUC College of Education. Cross- and/or adjunct appointments are available.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The Director is expected:
- to provide leadership by example;
- to promote the growth and development of the Center for Integrated Research in Cognitive and Neural Sciences through excellence in research, teaching, and service;
- to facilitate collaborative and multidisciplinary research in the neural sciences, including molecular neuroscience, neuroanatomy, neuroimaging, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, neurology, cognitive/behavioral sciences, psychology, developmental and aging-related neuroscience, rehabilitation science, and translational research;
- to increase extramural funding and resources for basic and applied research; and
- to enhance cross-disciplinary education and training of undergraduates, graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows.
As a faculty member, the Director is expected to maintain a high-profile research program and contribute to the teaching missions of the department, school, and university, as appropriate.
Administration and Service: 40-50%
Establish and implement a strategic plan for the growth of the center that will mobilize faculty, staff, students, and other groups through collaboration and communication to achieve high performance in research and education. Serve as the representative for the center with university administration and interact with local, state, and federal organizations to promote center activities and stimulate research and funding opportunities. Serve on departmental, school, college, and university committees.
Research: 40%
Maintain an internationally prominent research program; secure extramural funding; publish scholarly works; present research findings at national/international meetings in area of scientific expertise; guide the research programs of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; and supervise laboratory personnel.
Teaching: 10-20%
Prepare and deliver limited lectures in courses offered by the Director's affiliate department. Participate in the education of graduate students by membership on thesis and dissertation committees.
Exact distribution of responsibilities within the department of co-appointment will be negotiated annually and finalized between the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Department Chair, and the Director of the CIR-CNS.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree, substantial experience in research that is internationally recognized and ongoing scholarly and grantmanship activity, experience in administration, and strong leadership qualities. Candidates should also have a record of collaboration and/or interactions with a full range of researchers from the basic to clinical neurosciences. Evidence of successful training of graduate and/or postdoctoral students is also required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate should have an internationally recognized research program in an area of basic and/or clinical neurosciences that is complementary to the existing strengths within the university; show evidence of strong leadership qualities in science and administration; possess a strong record of peer-reviewed research, publications, research funding, and other professional accomplishments; and be highly innovative, creative, communicative, and dynamic.
SALARY
Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications at the Professor or Associate Professor level. Benefits include state-sponsored health plans, dental insurance, retirement plans, and generous vacation time.
