Undergraduate Researchers: Robyn Reeves and Suzanne Milano

Robyn Reeves and Suzanne Milano

Robyn Reeves (Cinema & Photography) and Suzanne Milano (Cinema & Photography/Radio & Television) won a joint 2006-07 Undergraduate Research/Creative Activity Award after learning of the after-school and summer project of WSIU Public Broadcasting, SciGirls. SciGirls consists of approximately 135 girls participating in monthly science investigations, held at various locations in the Southern Illinois region. Robyn and Suzanne (seen at right with mentor Cory Byers, a lecturer in radio/television) created an observational documentary that aims to answer three main questions. First, will the SciGirls program stimulate a continuing interest on these girls' part in the fields of math, science, and technology? Second, does it expand the girls' perceptions of female roles in a scientific field? Finally, how are these girls psychologically affected in a female-influenced environment?

Robyn's message: "I never thought I would have found something as special as SciGirls. This project sort of just fell into my lap and I couldn't have found something greater. During this past year, there were many obstacles to overcome in the project, but I feel that they've only made me a stronger filmmaker. With this documentary under my belt, I couldn't be more delighted to try out those skills I've gained in the real world. Girls Rule!"

Suzanne's message: "Making the SciGirls documentary has been an experience like no other. It has not only allowed me to document a group of extremely intelligent and enthusiastic young women, but it has allowed me to get in touch with the surrounding community. I have met some very special people that have really encouraged me and taught me a lot during the course of this film. Really, the entire filmmaking process has been a learning experience. Between time management, organizing interviews, scheduling equipment, and working with kids, I not only feel like I am a better filmmaker, but I now feel I am a much more rounded person. SciGirls Rocks!"
