Training Workshops

The Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders can offer training workshops on the topics below, and perhaps others upon request. The presentation lengths vary by topic. Some workshops will be scheduled annually on the SIU campus; these and others can be arranged at off-campus locations.

• Preparing children with autism for the least restrictive school and community environments
• Problem behavior: Causes, prevention, & treatment
• Support for the elementary school child with autism
• Teaching social skills to children with autism
• Teaching verbal behavior to children with autism
• Treatment for the nonverbal child with autism
Hands-on Training
It may be possible to arrange for community service providers to observe and receive training under the supervision of Center staff with children at the Center or at providers' work location. Providers could learn how to conduct discrete trial training, how to enhance motivation to perform learning activities, conduct activities that promote the development of language and social behavior, and more.
Training Packages
Several training topics cited above could be packaged for groups of service providers based on their specific interests. The topics and duration of training could be negotiated with the Center.
Training p ackages could be created for groups such as:
• Early intervention providers
• Preschool teachers
• Elementary school teachers
• Speech-language pathologists
• Instructional aides
• Home based instructors
Credit
It may be possible to arrange SIU graduate or undergraduate credit when training requirements and individuals meet University requirements. It also might be possible to arrange continuing education credits.
