The following are
some examples of past meeting topics:
- Social /informational meeting: Provided updates regarding upcoming
conventions, continuing education seminars, and fund raising and
social events, etc.
- Panel discussion: CDS faculty and staff answered questions regarding
admission to graduate school (e.g., requirements, application process,
resumes, letter of intent, etc.).
- Therapy sharing ideas: Second year CDS graduate students shared
therapy ideas, materials, helpful hints, etc. for students getting
ready to start clinical practica.
Guest speakers:
-Speech-language pathologists from the community spoke about various
types of communication disorders typically seen in their facilities,
etc.
- Professionals in related fields (e.g., deaf education) provided information
regarding clients served by several disciplines.
Fund raising activities:
We also sponsor several fund-raising events. Proceeds are donated to various charitable
organizations or to CDS students or clients. In the past, we have worked in
the concession stands at SIUC men's basketball games, and we have sold a
variety of products including NSSLHA sweatshirts & T-shirts, car window
stickers, and candles. We have donated money to Operation Smile, ASHA
Foundation, and the National Stroke Association, and we purchased a new
refrigerator and microwave for the CDS student lounge ("The
Oasis"). Typically, most of the fundraising proceeds go towards
paying hotel charges for NSSLHA members attending the national ASHA
convention and/or the state ISHA convention in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Professional convention attendance:
We help organize registration and sometimes travel to professional conventions. Funding
assistance has also been available as noted above.
Have fun!
In addition, NSSLHA organizes an annual Christmas party and spring picnic
among other "impromptu" social events.
