The
School of Social Work at Southern Illinois University Carbondale
has a rich tradition of educating students for employment
in a variety of human services at regional, state, national,
and international levels. We are committed to developing
generalist practitioners who are skilled in working with
individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.
Working with oppressed, disadvantaged, and culturally diverse
populations, especially in the small towns and communities
of rural areas, is also central to our mission. Our graduates
find employment in child welfare, health and medical care,
elderly services, addictions, education, community development,
private charities, public welfare agencies, and related
fields. |

In
the rapidly expanding field of human services, social workers
must be equipped to use analytical skills and knowledge that
better enable them to engage in ethical, responsible, and
self-critical social work practices. As funding and management
of services shift from government to communities, social workers
must also be prepared to collaborate and partner with other
professionals from a variety of academic disciplines like
the business community, city management, religious organizations,
neighborhood groups, legal systems, information systems, and
education, as well as human service agencies. The role of
a professional social worker is increasingly extended to being
active as public citizens in their communities to help shape
public policy and support programs that promote social justice.
There are great challenges for persons interested
in human services, but it is an immensely rewarding career
choice in terms of helping people utilize their capacity to
attain a quality of life. It is also a career that requires
a strong commitment to human rights and social justice, which
will lead to a lifetime of opportunities to enrich the lives
of many others as well as your own. I invite you to join us
in preparing individuals for a life of service.
Sincerely,
Mizanur R. Miah
