The 2007-2008 SISO Season

The Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra will perform an exciting series of concerts this season at Shryock Auditorium. Individual concert tickets are available in advance at the SIU Ticket Office in the Arena or the Student Center, at any Ticketmaster outlet, by calling 866-646-8849, online at Ticketmaster, or on the day of the concert at Shryock Auditorium.

Tuesday, September 25, 2007: Great Classics and Barta
SIU’s own Michael Barta was a finalist in the Tchaikovsky Competition, the world’s most prestigious musical competition. Our season opens with Professor Barta performing one of the most beloved works in the violin repertoire, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Also on the program is music by Haydn and Rossini. A gala opening night reception at the Stone Center, sponsored by President and Mrs. Poshard, takes place from 5-7pm. Reservations are required and the cost of the reception is $25.

Wednesday, October 31, 2007: Halloween Pops
This annual tradition will feature individual and ensemble performances from throughout the School of Music, in a funny and family-friendly atmosphere and featuring Peter and the Wolf.

Friday and Saturday, November 9 and 10, 2007: Puccini Operas
The Marjorie Lawrence Opera Theater, directed by Tim Fink, presents two hour-long operas by one of the greatest of all Italian opera composers. The tragedy, Suor Angelica, is sung in Italian with English supertitles, and includes some of the most beautiful music ever written. The comedy, Gianni Schicchi, is sung in English (also with supertitles) and includes the famous aria, “O mio babbino caro,” with SIU Professor, David Dillard performing the title role.

Friday, November 30, 2007: Sing-along Messiah
Welcome the holiday spirit as the SISO presents its first ever sing-along Messiah. Vocal soloists include SIU Professors Jeanine Wagner and David Dillard, and SIU alum, Randall Black. For this performance of the Christmas portion of Handel’s masterpiece, the orchestra will be in the pit, the soloists on stage and the audience seated according to voice type. Make sure to bring your score so you can sing along! Anyone is welcome to attend, whether they choose to sing or just listen.

Tuesday, February 19, 2008: Stars of Altgeld
This annual favorite features winners of the School of Music Solo Competition and great music for orchestra. This years winners are Emily Fons - Soprano, Jered Montgomery - Trumpet, Paul Petrucelly - Clarinet.

Tuesday, April 1, 2008: Emanuel Ax
Grammy-award winning Emanuel Ax is one of the ten greatest pianists of the last 100 years. He has performed with every major symphony orchestra in the world, and in solo and chamber music recitals in the world’s most prestigious concert halls. He has collaborated with artists, such as Yo-Yo Ma for over 25 years, and there are at least 58 commercial recordings of his in print. (http://www.emanuelax.com/). This world-class artist will perform Beethoven’s monumental “Emperor” Piano Concerto with the Southern Illinois Symphony. The orchestra will also perform Beethoven’s 8th Symphony on the concert.
