Become a Mentor
As a successful professional in your field, you are aware of the importance of developing a career network. A professional network is no less important to a soon-to-be graduate just beginning the job search than it is for a seasoned professional.
Obtaining an internship or finding that first job after graduation can be quite challenging, especially for students who have limited practical knowledge of their field or no professional network. This is why Career Services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has created the Saluki Mentor Network (SMN), a mentoring program connecting current SIUC students and alumni with practicing or retired professionals.
Goals of the Saluki Mentor Network are to:
- Facilitate connections between current students and practicing professionals.
- Assist current students in preparing for meaningful careers.
- Help students better relate academics to the professional world.
The Saluki Mentor Network will help students:
- Learn more about the skills and responsibilities involved in a particular profession.
- Gain information about typical advancement tracks and specialized skills or qualifying licensures or certifications needed in their field.
- Inquire about industry standards for resume development and interview skills.
- Seek advice and information regarding shadowing, internship and job opportunities.
- Obtain guidance regarding the transition from college to work.
- Network with professionals in their field.
Mentors with the Saluki Mentor Network totally control their degree of involvement in the program. Each mentor determines:
- His or her number of mentee contacts per month - maximum of 10.
-
Preferred method of contact:
- E-mail
- Work or home address
- Work or home phone
-
What type of guidance he or she would like to provide
- Networking, career advising, resume review, etc.
Also, the Saluki Mentor Network is password protected and mentor information is only accessible to students registered with Career Services.
Helping undergraduates plan and prepare for meaningful careers is quite rewarding and we urge you to join us in this quest. If you are interested in becoming a mentor with the Saluki Mentor Network, please complete the mentor registration form.
