International Students & Scholars

F-2, H-4, and J-2 Visa Holder

A spouse and unmarried minor children may accompany or join a student at a later time. Dependents must secure an F-2 or J-2 Visa to enter the United States. The student or scholar must establish, to the satisfaction of the Consular and Port of entry officers, that there are sufficient funds available to support the dependents during the time a student or scholar is in the United States. Proof must also be supplied to show that the dependents intend to return home by the conclusion of the academic program. The office of International Students and Scholars has information about the process for securing the appropriate Visa. There may be a deposit required before the documents are issued for the dependent to secure a Visa.

A letter of invitation can be obtained at ISS, for family of students or scholars to visit the United States for a short time. The letter will enable the visitor to secure a B Visa at the Embassy/Consulate. The maximum amount of time for a B-2 visa is 6 months.

Dependents holding an F-2 or H-4 visa are not permitted to work in the United States.

J-2 visa holders may work only if prior written permission is obtained from the Immigration Office. They are subject to Social Security tax and income taxes. Consult with ISS office for further information.
