Nutrient and sediment attenuation by riparian buffer zones, fate and transport of
nutrients in agricultural watersheds,
 in-stream cycling of nitrogen, Total Maximum Daily Load development, nitrogen cycling in forested watersheds, flooding impacts on bottomland forest health, stream channel morphology responses to landscape perturbations, and watershed management planning.
 
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Assistant Professor of Forest Hydrology/Watershed Management.  Aug. 1999 –
present.  Department of Forestry, University of Southern Illinois Carbondale.  Chair – Dr. John Phelps.  The position is a 50/45/5 teaching/research/service appointment.  Current and past research projects include field-scale investigations of sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus attenuation rates in surface runoff and groundwater by forest and giant cane riparian communities; watershed-scale analysis of the effectiveness of varying percentages of forest riparian cover in reducing sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus loads in agriculturally impacted streams; in-stream cycling of nitrogen; impact of nitrogen-fixing invasive species on nitrate leaching in agricultural watersheds; channel morphology responses to harvesting and road construction in forested watersheds; and flooding impacts on bottomland forest health.

Jon O’Brien (2002) Factors affecting denitrification in a southern Illinois stream.  Jon is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Biology at Kansas State University.

Jeremy Webber (2002) Effect of riparian forest cover on stream water quality in

headwater agricultural watersheds in southern Illinois.  Jeremy is currently employed as the Community Forestry Outreach Coordinator for the New Jersey Forest Service.

Chris Blattel (2003) Groundwater nitrogen and phosphate attenuation by giant cane and forest riparian buffers in the Cache River watershed.  Chris is currently pursuing employment in the field of forest hydrology.
           
Mandy Stone (2003) Co-advised with Matt Whiles in Zoology.  The influence of
riparian vegetation on water quality, in-stream habitat, and biotic integrity in agriculturally impacted southern Illinois streams.  Mandy is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Zoology at Southern Illinois University.

 USDA National Needs Water Science Fellow.  Aug. 1996 – Aug. 1999.  One of two
national fellowships at the Pennsylvania State University in support of research directed at the physical, hydrological and chemical aspects of nonpoint pollutants.  Advisor – Dr. David DeWalle.  Doctoral research focused on determining causes of the significant variation in nitrogen export from mid-Appalachian forested watersheds.

Current Courses Being Taught at SUIC:
FOR 402 Wildland Hydrology – an upper level undergraduate course emphasizing the fundamentals of hydrology as related to forest and wildland water resources.  Topics include the hydrologic cycle with emphasis on precipitation, soil and groundwater regimes, evapotranspiration, surface and subsurface runoff, and the quantity and timing of water yield.
 FOR 429 Watershed Management Field Laboratory – an upper level undergraduate field laboratory course focused on hydrological and biological methods used to manage watersheds and assess watershed health.  Laboratory topics include stream gaging, soil water and groundwater sampling, channel morphology, stream benthos measurements, and water quality analysis of stream and lake ecosystems. 
FOR 430 Wildland Watershed Management – an upper level undergraduate course emphasizing the principles, technical problems, procedures, alternatives and consequences encountered in managing wildland and mixed land-use watersheds for water quantity and quality in harmony with other uses.
FOR 452 Forest Soils – an upper level undergraduate course focused on the characterization and fundamental concepts of forest soils and their relationships to forest communities and forest management practices.  Emphasis is on the chemical, biological, and physical properties of forest soils as related to forests and forest management.
FOR 502 Advanced Watershed Hydrology and Management – a graduate course emphasizing the study of current issues relating to hydrology and the management of water resources in forested and mixed land-use watersheds.  Readings, discussions, and projects will focus on research and management topics in water quality and quantity at regional, national, and international levels.

Watershed Management Laboratory Instructor.  Jan. 1997 - May 1997.  Pennsylvania State University.  Responsible for teaching laboratories and grading reports for 9 upper-level undergraduate and graduate students.  Topics covered include stream water quality sampling, channel stability evaluation, stream discharge measurement, stream benthos identification, limnological measurements, groundwater sampling, climatic station, snow surveying, fish population surveying, soil water infiltration and lysimeters, peak flow estimation, and basin characterization.
 
 Introductory Biology Laboratory Instructor.  Aug. 1995 - May 1996.   Pennsylvania State University.  Responsible for teaching laboratories and grading reports, quizzes, and term papers for 2 sections of 24 undergraduate students each.  Topics covered include plant diversity, dendrology, primary production in plants, flowering plant sex, animal diversity, animal behavior, phylogenetics, evolution, antibiotic resistance in bacteria, and genetic transmission.
