How to spell "freebies:" SIUC U-card

CARBONDALE, Ill. -Southern Illinois University Carbondale students interested in winning a semester's worth of tuition or books can pick up a Student Involvement U-Card now at the Student Development office at the Student Center.

Tom Hartman, a junior in computer science from Freeport, Ill., became the first U-Card winner in December. He chose to take the textbooks he needed for spring semester because his tuition is paid by a grant. The University Bookstore donated all the textbooks.

Conceived by SIUC's Student Development staff and launched last fall, the Student Involvement U-Card is designed to get students to participate in several broad categories of University events. It encourages students to reach out and try something new. For example, theater buffs are encouraged to attend a lecture game, or die hard basketball fans are prodded to consider a symphony concert.

Each time a student attends an event, the student receives a sticker. Once filled with eight stickers, the card can be returned to Student Development for the drawing.
