Shimkus - Phelps Debate Draws Capacity Crowd

John Shimkus (R-Collinsville), at left, and David Phelps (D-Eldorado),
at right, met recently in a well-attended debate at Southern
Illinois University Edwardsville. They are shown here during a chat

The debate, one of four scheduled in Southern Illinois before the
upcoming November election, was co-sponsored by local chapters of
the League of Women Voters and the American Association of
University Women, as well as SIUE's Political Science Association
and SIUE's Kimmel Leadership Center.
Shimkus is representative from the 20th Congressional District,
while Phelps is from the 19th District, but because of redistricting
the two are battling for one spot as representative of a new and
expanded District 19. Every seat of the 400-seat Katherine Dunham
Hall theater was filled for the event, with several people seated in
side aisles and in additional chairs placed in front of the stage.
