SIUE Officially Opens New Pharmacy Building

EDWARDSVILLE,
Ill. - State, regional, and local officials, as well as the Southern
Illinois Univesity leadership, were on hand recently to take part in
the official opening of the new $3.26 million SIU Edwardsville
School of Pharmacy buiilding that houses the only pharmacy school in
downstate Illinois.
The new SIUE School of Pharmacy, which began Aug. 15 with an
inaugural class of 82, is located in SIUE's University Park. The
15,000-square-foot facility contains pharmacy laboratories,
classrooms, and faculty offices. An adjacent existing building also
was renovated for more Pharmacy administrative offices.
On hand for the event were Illinois Sen. Frank Watson (R-Greenville)
and Illinois Rep. Ron Stephens (R-Greenville), both pharmacists;
Illinois Rep. Jay Hoffman (D-Collinsville), Illinois Rep. Tom
Holbrook (D-Belleville), Illinois Sen. Deanna Demuzio
(D-Carlinville), and Illinois Sen. William Haine (D-Alton), along
with several members of the School of Pharmacy Advisory Board.
The need for pharmacists nationwide is expected to grow by 30
percent in the next eight years, while the need in Illinois also
will grow by nearly 20 percent in the next six years.
The SIUE School of Pharmacy, which offers a professional program
leading to a Doctor of Pharmacy, values excellence in teaching,
pharmacy practice, research/scholarship and service. The program of
study is based on current knowledge and technology from pharmacy and
other disciplines, and is delivered through a variety of innovative
teaching strategies.
The School will collaborate with rural and urban health care
institutions to meet the health care needs of Central and Southern
Illinois and the St. Louis metropolitan area.
