David Werner Named Chancellor
at SIUE
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -The appointment of David J. Werner as Chancellor of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville was announced today by SIU President Ted Sanders. The appointment is effective Sept. 1, contingent upon formal action by the Board of Trustees. Werner will serve until a permanent chancellor is appointed and takes office.
Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at SIUE since 1987, Werner will assume the position left vacant by Chancellor Nancy Belck, who has accepted similar responsibilities with the University of Nebraska at Omaha, also effective Sept. 1.
President Sanders said, "I am pleased that Dr. Werner, who will not be a candidate for the permanent position, has agreed to take over the leadership of the Edwardsville campus during this period. He has demonstrated by his many years of excellent service to SIUE that he is highly qualified and capable of continuing the progress the University has enjoyed the past several years." The President said a committee will be named in September to begin the work of conducting an intensive search for a permanent Chancellor of the Edwardsville campus.
Werner has been associated with SIUE since 1968 when he joined the faculty of the School of Business. He was named dean of the school in 1975, serving 12 years before his appointment as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Two years ago, the title was changed to vice chancellor. He holds rank in the School of Business as a professor of management information systems and operations management.
Werner received his baccalaureate degree in industrial engineering from St. Louis University and completed his master's and doctoral degrees in industrial engineering and management science at Northwestern University.
Werner is a consultant-evaluator for the North Central Association and has been active in the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business and other scholarly and professional organizations. He has been a member of the board of trustees of the Illinois Council on Economic Education and a member of the operating board of the Mid-Illinois Computer Consortium. He has served in a number of academic, staff, governance and committee roles during his tenure with the University.
Werner and his wife, Kay, are the parents of three children. They reside in Glen Carbon.
