Joseph C. Schmit obtained a B.S. degree in chemistry from North Dakota State University and a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry in 1971 from Purdue University. He spent two years as an NIH postdoctoral fellow and three years as a research associate at the University of California, San Diego prior to joining the faculty of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. After many years serving as the Chair of the department, he retired in August 2007.
