Program Mission

The SIUC master’s degree program in Food and Nutrition (with a concentration in community nutrition) and dietetic internship is dedicated to providing students the education and supervised practice experiences that facilitate entry level competence in community dietetics in accordance with the accepted principles of the American Dietetic Association and the Association of Graduate Programs in Public Health Nutrition, Inc.

 Program Description

The SIUC Dietetic Internship is a CADE* accredited Advanced Degree Dietetic Internship Program designed for students who want to complete a Master of Science degree in Food and Nutrition with a concentration in community nutrition, and who also want to qualify to take the examination for Registered Dietitians (R.D.).  Dietitians who practice in community settings work to promote health and prevent disease.  Potential employers include health departments, universities, ambulatory care clinics, and hospital and community outreach programs.  The Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.  The Dietetic Internship Program at SIUC is currently granted accreditation status through 2010 by CADE of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

Program of Study

Coursework, thesis, and rotations are usually completed in two years (6 semesters).  Coursework and thesis are completed within the first 4 semesters.  The remaining 2 semesters are spent in rotations (10 weeks each in food service management, clinical/medical nutrition therapy, and community nutrition) where you receive 1200 hours of supervised practice experience.  Thirty-eight to 41 credit hours are required to complete graduate coursework and internship.   Students who have not successfully completed a community nutrition or nutritional biochemistry course may need to take these classes.  A grade of B or better must be attained in core courses.  Upon successful completion of the program, a verification statement of qualification is issued allowing you to take the registration examination for dietitians administered by the Commission for Dietetic Registration.
