Breeding Stable Manager

The Breeding Stable Manager needs to know the techniques for live cover breeding and/or artificial insemination (A.I.) based upon the breed of horses they are working with. This position requires working with stallions under sometimes challenging conditions. Handling of broodmares under breeding conditions and early training of foals is also part of the job demand. Excellent horse handling skills and physical strength are needed. The Breeding Stable Manager must also be able to assist in foaling, and care for the mare and foal. This requires excellent observation skills and attention to detail. A Breeding Stable Manager should be strong and confident in their abilities. They should also have a good background in anatomy, reproduction, and business.

The Breeding Stable Manager will be responsible for breeding, record keeping, and finances for the horse breeding farm. Often, promoting, scheduling and billing the stallion's services are the responsibility of the Breeding Stable Manager. Therefore, this position often requires good communication skills. The heaviest work demands are generally January through July and will include long hours, nights and weekends. The background and educational qualifications of a Breeding Stable Manager are not definite. Currently, it is a good practice to have at least a two-year degree in Equine Science or certification from a technical school or national breeding association. Some states require certificates in artificial insemination.

Incomes vary widely depending on the breed, farm size and sophistication, and other factors. Living on the farm is generally required and housing is provided as a benefit. An average salary range of $20,000-$50,000 per year can be expected. Most positions do not include medical, retirement or other benefits, although on-the-farm housing is usually provided free of charge.
