
Dr. Blinde has been a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education since 1987. She specializes in the areas of social psychology of sport, diversity issues, research methods, and gender in sport. Dr. Blinde completed her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1987 and did her undergraduate and master’s work at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She was recently named one of the “90 Notable Graduates” of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Teachers’ College during their 90th anniversary celebration.
Dr. Blinde is currently the Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Physical Education and oversees the
Sport
Studies Track in the graduate program. Her teaching responsibilities at the graduate level include Social Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity (PE 409), Techniques of Research (PE 500), Methods of Interview Research (PE 502), and Gender and Sport (PE 560/WMST 560). At the undergraduate level, Dr. Blinde teaches Psychological and Social Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity (PE 345), Sport and Modern Society (PE 245/SOC 233), and a newly developed Core Curriculum class,
Diversity in American Sport (PE 210).
Dr. Blinde’s current research interests include gender dynamics in sport, the college sport experience of male and female athletes, women and baseball, and gender perceptions of young girls. Her research has been published in such outlets as the Sociology of Sport Journal; Journal of Sport and Social Issues; Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport; Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; The Sociological Quarterly; Sociological Focus; Journal of Sport Behavior; Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal; International Review of Sociology of Sport; and International Sports Journal. Dr. Blinde also serves as a reviewer for several journals as well as having served on the Editorial Board for the Sociology of Sport Journal and Journal of Sport and Social Issues.
As an advocate for women’s issues, Dr. Blinde has received several recognitions at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. These include being a recipient of the University Faculty Woman of Distinction Award (1993) and being selected as the SIUC nominee to the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education - Recognition for Advancement of Gender Equity and Awareness Issues (1995). In addition, Dr. Blinde has served as a mentor in the Faculty Mentoring program, been a member of the University Women’s Professional Advancement Advisory Committee, and completed a Chair Internship sponsored through University Women’s Professional Advancement.
