Department of Speech Communication

Welcome to the home page of the Department of Speech Communication in the College of Liberal Arts at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. We offer bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees with a wide variety of specializations in the communication discipline. We are proud of our outstanding faculty, excellent programs, small classes, strong research, student achievements and traditions of excellence.

Communications Building

The study of human communication is increasingly important in our global society. Developing effective and ethical communication skills and studying the communication process expands our knowledge and teaches us to understand how people in various social contexts interact. Our undergraduate and graduate programs help our students succeed in a changing world.

If you want to read some recent stories of student and faculty achievement you can click on our annual department newsletter, Speak Easy, or, you can check Kudos & Celebrations to see a recent monthly posting of department accomplishments. You can read a Department History of Speech Communication at SIUC tracing back the program back to its inception. The editorial offices of two scholarly journals are housed in our department: Professor Lenore Langsdorf edits Human Studies, and the qualitative research journal for graduate students, Kaleidoscope, was founded by students in our program and is supported by the National Communication Association as well as our Graduate School.
