The School of Journalism at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale is one of the nation's oldest and this year celebrates its 54th year. It offers preparation for rewarding careers in advertising/integrated marketing communication, news-editorial journalism, and photojournalism.

The School is fully accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Its award winning student newspaper, the Daily Egyptian, is produced entirely by students--from newswriting and photography to editing and design, from advertising sales to advertising creation, and from computerized pagination to offset printing on its own press.

In 1997, former Illinois U.S. Senator Paul Simon joined the School's faculty and directed the University's Public Policy Institute until his death in December, 2003. The Institute's associate director is Mike Lawrence, former Press Secretary to the Illinois governor and now a Journalism faculty member. The School also has two journalists-in-residence -- both former long-time staffers at the Chicago Tribune.

The School enrolls approximately 340 majors taught by 14 faculty, all of whom have professional experience in their field and most of whom hold doctorates. All classes are taught by professors, often assisted by graduate students. Most classes have laboratory sections where students use one of the School's three computer laboratories to create professional-quality advertisements, news reports, or photographs. Instruction emphasizes "hands-on" learning, often using a team approach.

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is located two hours southeast of St. Louis, Missouri and 3 hours north of Memphis, Tennessee in the heart of the Midwest. The wooded campus is surrounded by the Shawnee National Forest and enjoys moderate winters and spectacularly beautiful springs and autumns.
