Admission Criteria:
  • Minimum 3.0 overall GPA (3.25 in major)
  • Applicant must have completed at least one year of college Japanese before applying. First-year students should participate in the Year in Japan program in order to begin their language training overseas
  • Preference will be given to juniors and seniors
  • Students must be taking a major or minor in Foreign Language & International Trade, Japanese, East Asian Studies, or related special major
Number of Participants: 1 to 2 per year

Program Objective: To enable intermediate to advanced students in Japanese to further their study of the language and to take advanced courses in Asian Studies.
Program Structure: After a week of on-site orientation, participants will attend the School of Asian Studies at Kansai Gaidai for one or two semesters. Students must enroll full-time each semester and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA to continue in the program. All students must enroll in one of the spoken Japanese courses appropriate to their language level. Remaining courses are selected from those offered by the School of Asian Studies. Courses in most non-science disciplines are offered.
Program Site Resources: The School of Asian Studies is a modern, well-appointed facility with state-of-the-art language labs located on the main campus of Kansai Gaidai. There is also a well stocked library, gyms, and a full program of extracurricular activities.
Housing: Housing is either in dormitories (Japanese-style) or with families in the Osaka area. The off-campus housing with families is highly recommended, but does require some commuting.
Costs/Benefits: Our students pay SIUC tuition, fees, and room & board (based on residence hall charge) plus a small exchange fee. Tuition, fees, and housing costs at Kansai Gaidai will be waived. Students will receive an allowance for meal costs. Students are responsible for their own transportation, books & supplies, and personal expenses.
