SIUC offers a program in cooperation with Salzburg College in Austria with features extensive business offerings each spring semester. All courses, except for German, are taught in English.
Salzburg is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. With a population of about 140,000, it is situated on the northern edge of the eastern Alps and close to the German border. It is surrounded by picturesque mountains and is near a famous lake district. The city itself still mirrors in its historical center a thousand years of European history and culture. Its rich musical heritage is reflected in a great variety of concerts and other musical events throughout the year. There are also five theaters that show plays, musicals, and opera from September through June, as well as the world-famous festivals in January, at Easter, and in the summer. As a traditional university town - the old Benedictine university was founded in 1623, abolished in 1810, and refounded as a state institution in 1962 - Salzburg offers an excellent background for scholarly research.
As a place of rare natural and artistic beauty, Salzburg is a European center of tourism. It also plays a significant role in the international trade. Situated in the heart of Europe, the city has gained further significance since the opening of Eastern Europe. As a traditional border town and major crossroad, Salzburg has established itself as a center of import and export, banking, and international transport business which makes it a great location for the study of international business and communication.
Last but not least, Salzburg is ideally located for travel. It is less than four hours by train from Vienna, the capital of the country; only two hours from Munich, the southern German cultural center; an overnight train ride from Paris or Venice, and only a few more hours from Florence, Rome, Amsterdam, or Berlin. Several of the Eastern European countries are also within easy reach.
Thus, by its history, its cultural and educational environment, and its location, Salzburg is an ideal setting for a European study experience.
