Fall 2005/Academic Year 2005/06 Online Application Now Available - Application Deadline April 4, 2005. The deadline for Spring 2006 programs (start date between December 15 - April 15) will be September 19, 2005.
Founded under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 this congressionally-funded program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented in US study abroad and those with high financial need. The program aims to encourage students to choose nontraditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia and aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad. This includes but is not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students of nontraditional age. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of two-year and four-year public and private institutions from all 50 states.
The Gilman Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based undergraduate opportunities abroad of up to one academic year. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. The Institute of International Education is pleased to announce the beginning of the 2007-2008 National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship competition.
NSEP awards scholarships to American students for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East). NSEP was designed to provide American undergraduates with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for a commitment to seek work in the federal government.
The 2007-2008 NSEP Boren Scholarships offer funding for study abroad in summer 2007, fall 2007, and/or spring 2008.

Association of Teachers of Japanese (ATJ) Bridging Scholarship
Amount: ranges from $2,500 to $4,000 depending on length of study program in Japan
Eligibility: undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan; must be a US citizen or permanent resident

The Fulbright progam offers recent U.S. graduates, postgraduate candidates and developing professionals and artists the opportunity to study or conduct research abroad. The Fulbright program is the United State's flagship international exchange initiative.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who hold a B.A. or equivalent at the time of the grant or who have extensive professional study and/or experience in fields in which they wish to pursue a project; have appropriate language proficiency to undertake the proposed study or research and must be in good health. Graduating seniors are encouraged to apply.

The Freeman scholarship's purpose is to encourage students to study in Asian countries.
Amount: $5,000 for one semester; $7,000 for academic year
Eligibility: undergraduate students who have applied or have been accepted to a study abroad program in Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, or Thailand; must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; awards are based on need.

The Department of Education's (DOE) Office of Postsecondary Education issued a notice requesting applications for the FY2004 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship Program, which provides opportunities for graduate students to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. Priority will be given to projects that focus on one or more of the following areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, East Central Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (Canada, Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean).
