Short-TERM Study Abroad

Why content yourself with learning about the world when you can experience it directly? From the the African culture in Ghana to the latest business ideas in Europe and more, SIUC offers a variety of travel/study seminars that meet your needs. Courses are offered during the summer months and intersessions. Taught by full-time faculty of the university, courses are offered world-wide in a variety of fields. Most travel / study courses do not require a specialized foreign language background. The dates listed are subject to change.

African Cultural Continuities: Ghana (June 3 to 24, 2007)
BAS 495

This program is designed to introduce students to the similarities in the culture (food, dance, music, family traditions and religion) of people in Ghana and the cultures of people in the African Diaspora. Program will include an overview of Ghanaian history and culture, home visits, observations of traditional chief systems, visits with African Americans living in Ghana, government officials, university students and faculty. Requires instructor permission. This year's program will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Ghana's independence.

Architectural Field Studies in Europe (May 13 - June 10, 2007)
ARC 444 / ARC 314i

Le Petit Grand Tour d'Architecture - Spend 24 days in Europe, exploring sites in Italy and Greece. This year's expedition will trace the lineage of the classical orders through France, Germany, Italy and Greece to the cultural aspects of modern day architecture and life. Austria: Salzburg College Summer Session (May 18 - June 10, 2007)

Salzburg College will offer a summer session from May 16 to June 23, 2007. Students will be expected to take two classes (6 credits) from among the following options: German language studies (various levels), Understanding Austria: History, Politics & Culture, Austrian Literature and Culture, The European Union, Music History, the Mozart Project or music performance studies. Students will stay with Austrian families. There will also be a four day trip to Vienna, Austria. Application deadline: February 9, 2007.

Art & Design in the Scottish Highlands (May/June TBA)

Hospitalfield House, our base in Scotland, is close to the center of the ancient kingdom of the Piets, the enigmatic Celtic people who have left us their carved standing stones and shadows of a rich oral tradition. We will explore these traditions and other streams of Scottish history and literature as we explore the geographic diversity of Scotland through mini-bus trips to the Highlands, the Glens, agricultural areas, and villages. Bioarchaeological Field School in Italy (July 1 - 31, 2007)
ANTH 496

This course gives students hands-on training in the excavation of human skeletal remains from a 2nd–4th century AD Roman cemetery in southern Italy. In addition to learning how to excavate Roman burials, students will develop skills in the documentation and analysis of skeletal remains and associated burial artifacts. The field school is located at Roman period site of Vagnari, southern Italy (near the modern city of Gravina). More details Application Instructions  Application

This year's interdisciplinary and team-taught seminar will explore the contributions of Egypt to Western Civilization. Participants in the seminar will also be able to enroll in the parallel Greece seminar if they wish, since the dates are coordinated. The Egypt program will visit Cairo, Luxor,Abydos, Aswan, Lake Nasser, Abu Simbel, Alexandria and feature a Nile cruise.

French Language & Culture - (Next offered in 2008)
FR 375 / FR 475

Students participating in the program will study French at the Institut de Langue et Culture Francaises in Lyon. They will receive transfer credit at SIUC for their studies in Lyon. Courses are offered at elementary, intermediate and advanced levels of French grammar, composition, literature, history and art. More details...

This year's interdisciplinary and team-taught program will explore the contributions of Greece to Western Civilization (democracy, philosophy, and theater). Participants will also be able to enroll in the parallel programs to Egypt if they wish since the dates are coordinated. The Greek seminar will visit Athens, Delphi, Mycenae, Troy, Kusadasi, Ephesos, Priene, Miletos, Samos, and Kos. Also available through SIU Edwardsville.

Natural Resources of Ireland (June 22 - July 6, 2007)
FOR 494b / FOR 494c

Examine forestry management and recreational development in Ireland. There will be visits to a variety of sites and parks within the Republic of Ireland including Avondale House, Glendalough Monastery, the Rock of Cashel, Ross Castle, Muckross House and gardens, Derrcunihy Woods, Craggonowen, Connemara National Park, and Burren National Park. The Social Architecture of Oaxaca, Mexico: Social Services, Design and Hispanic Culture

(August 5 - 18, 2007)

Traditional Oaxacan weaver

Oaxaca is the political and economic center of the state of Oaxaca, as well as the home of two universities. The art and architecture of the region express the cultures of the fifteen indigenous groups which reside in the state  and its Spanish and French heritage. The program features an interdisciplinary focus through field trips to community and social services as well as archaeological sites at Mitla and Monte Alban, the home of Benito Juarez, the Santo Domingo church and Anthropological Museum of Pre-Hispanic Art, Coyotepec (traditional black pottery), San Martin (traditional wooden carvings), and Teotitlan (traditional weaving). Students will explore how the environment, including architecture and design, impacts behavior and the sustainability of the culture.

Social Work in Germany (May 13 - 24, 2007)

This program is jointly arranged with the University of Applied Sciences in Coburg with the second week occurring in Munich.The program will focus on the increasingly important connection of human rights to social work, from both European and US perspectives. Field visits and seminars will focus on human rights issues, including child welfare, immigration policies, health care and religious, ethnic and political persecution. There will be opportunities to visit Salzburg, Neuschwanstein and other scenic areas.

Social Work in India (December 26, 2007 - January 10, 2008)

This program will introduce students to social development and policy issues in India such as poverty alleviation, non-formal education, prostitution, HIV-AIDS and multicultural aspects of healthcare in the Indian context.The program will include visits to three major cities in India: Mumbai (Bombay), New Delhi and Jaipur along with a cultural visit to the Taj Mahal.

Northern Nature and Environment Studies: Animal and Plant Ecology
University of Oulu
Field courses in aquatic animals, ecological botany, and terrestrial animals at the university's research stations in northern Finland. Learn about the ecology and classification of plants and animals in the Nordic countryside and wilderness.

Ajou University
Six-week summer program in Korean and Asian Studies. Intensive Korean, East Asian/Korean studies courses in English. Language option: beginning or intermediate level. Yonsei University
Six-week summer program focusing on Korea and East Asia. Optional pre-session field trip to tour major places of interest outside of Seoul. On Wednesdays, students participate in special activities: Geomdo, Taekwondo, ceramics, bamboo flute, folk music, calligraphy, painting, and pottery.

The Netherlands

European Studies
Leiden University
Leiden offers an ISEP-Direct European Studies summer program focusing on European culture and the interactions with other cultures that have shaped it. The Netherlands provides an ideal setting for a study of this subject. The Dutch have played a major role in European history and in the world through trade, exploration and colonialism. Leiden - the site of a medieval university and the point of departure for the pilgrims that first settled America - and its neighboring cities are rich in art treasures and manuscripts documenting this inheritance. 6 ECTS credits = 3 U.S. credits.

Thailand

Buddhism and Thai Society
Thammasat University
Four-week program designed specifically for a small group of foreign students interested in Buddhism and Asian Studies with a focus on the complex relationship between Buddhism and Thai history, politics, economics, education, literature, law, arts and theatre. Site visits of particular historical importance, such as Ayudhaya, Pimai, Surin, and Chiangmai.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE OPTIONS

French


Université de Savoie
Intensive French language program at the beginner, low-intermediate, and advanced-intermediate levels at the Université de Savoie, Chambéry. Instruction and support services provided by the Institut Spécialisé de l'Enseignement du Français aus Etrangers (ISEFE). Twenty hours of class per week for five weeks. Field trips to sites in the scenic surrounding area and cultural activities. There is a one-week break after the first 3 weeks of class - students may stay in Chambéry [housing is provided], travel on their own, or participate in activities/trips offered by the ISEFE. Chambéry is located near the Alps, a couple of hours by train from Switzerland, Italy, and Paris.
Credits: 5-6 U.S. credits (100 hours of instruction)

Technische Universität Braunschweig
Six-week intensive German language and civilization course with excursions to Berlin, Hamburg, Goslar, and other historic sites. Classes available for advanced beginner, intermediate and advanced level students.

Universität Marburg
Marburg offers an ISEP-Direct intensive German language and culture program (beginner, intermediate and advanced levels) that combines a summer and semester of study (German language courses and European studies classes).

Spanish
Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile
Six-week program in Spanish language and Chilean culture combines intensive language study and an overview of national literature and modern social and political issues in Chile. Total contact hours: 90. Cultural activities, two day excursions and one weekend excursion to scenic points of interest in the region. Valparaíso, the cultural and legislative capital, and the main commercial harbor of Chile, offers an ideal setting for students to experience Chile. Program is appropriate for beginner to advanced-level students (2-5 semesters of university-level Spanish).

Universidad de Monterrey, Mexico
Five-week summer program in Spanish Language & Contemporary Mexican Culture . Program is offered at basic and intermediate levels of Spanish.

Course 1: Basic Spanish & Contemporary Mexican Culture
This course is intended for students with little or no knowledge of Spanish. Contemporary Mexican Culture portion is taught in English.

Course 2: Intermediate Spanish & Contemporary Mexican Culture
This course is intented for students with intermediate-level Spanish. Contemporary Mexican Culture portion is taught in Spanish and English.

Universidad Católica del Uruguay
Four-week program in Spanish language and Latin American History and Culture combined with community service in Montevideo. Program includes morning classes, community service in the afternoon, and weekly cultural activities (theatre, tango, etc.) and a tour of Montevideo. Guided visits to some of the following sites are included as well: coastal towns and hot springs. Community service projects include serving the underprivileged and marginalized populations in schools, youth centers, hospitals and displaced communities. Program is appropriate for intermediate-level students (4 semesters of university-level Spanish or the equivalent).

Utrecht Network - International Summer School

Ljubljana, Slovania

Environment and Resource Management - Beginning in late June (tentative). Program length: 2 weeks.

The objectives are to present the scientific knowledge about Environmental and Resource Management, give an explanation of the vulnerability of the environment owing to different pollution sources, and ways to solve environmental problems in coordination of all relevant participants with the best non-polluting technologies. Then the essential question of transfer to the results to policy makers, local authorities and engineering companies will be debates to get an overview of the future of some techniques in the treatment of different pollution sources and problems.
