Lifelong Learning and Service:   An Organization for Older Learners

New officers for 2003-2005

Officers Elected 

The slate of officers for 2003-2005 has been approved by the membership and includes: Chair: Anita Revelle, Institute for Learning in Retirement, Illinois State University; Vice-Chair: Terri Dousias, Lifelong Learners, Prairie State College; Members at Large are Cheryl Barber, Personal and Professional Enrichment Programs; University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign; Mike Shore, RSVP, Highland Community College; and Mayuko Sterzinger, Heartland Community College. Outgoing President is Sherry Sparks, Continuing Education, John Wood College.

Lifelong Learning and Service is a coalition of community college and university older learner programs. They meet twice each year to share information about involving older persons in educational programs and in service opportunities.

Communications Contest  

The Second Communications contest was announced by Lifelong. The categories are Excellence for Instructor, Volunteer, Service, Innovation, or Information (Brochure or Publicity). Those eligible are community college and university programs for older learners. Deadline: December 15, 2003 Contact: ssparks@jwcc.edu  or mshore@highland.cc.il.us

Next Meeting 

The Winter Meeting will be held on February 26 with video connections between the College of DuPage in the north, the Illinois Community College Board in Springfield, and a location to be announced in the south. 

Lifelong was founded in 1992 and is sponsored by the Illinois Community College Board, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and the Intergenerational Initiative at Southern Illinois University. Organizational representatives are Lynn Neidigh and Preston Morgan (ICCB), and Jane Angelis (Intergenerational Initiative/ SIU Carbondale)

Saving Our Stories History Day   Oral History Awards for Family and Multicultural History

 Awards

Two new intergenerational categories will be added to the State History Expo in 2004: family history and multicultural history. Illinois students from 6th to 12th grade are invited to submit an oral history about their family or another culture. Four $100 awards will be given to middle school students and high school students. 

To Compete for Awards

Conduct an oral history interview with older members of your family or elders of another culture. Include the continent of your interviewee's origin, migration to America and Illinois, the challenges they faced and how they met them, and the traditions that have been passed down to present generations. The papers should not exceed 2000 words and must be submitted through the city fairs of the Chicago Metro History Education Center or the regional fairs of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
