Continuance Fall / Winter 2003-2004Planning the Commemoration of Lewis and Clark from Monticello to the Pacific Ocean Officers for the National Council of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial for 2003-2004 include Robert Archibald, Pres., Missouri; Bobbie Conner, Vice President; Idaho; Phyllis Yeager, Secretary, Indiana; Patti Thompson, Treasurer, Wisconsin. New council members are Chris Howell, Pawnee Nation, Kansas Arts Commission, Topeka; Daphne Richards Cook, coordinator of the Alliance of Tribal Tourism Advocates, South Dakota; Brenda Hall Dvorak, Mandan-Hidatsa-Arikari nation, North Dakota; Rebecca Wodder, president of American Rivers, Washington, D.C.; and Mike Nedd, Eastern States Office, Bureau of Land Management, Virginia. Karen Goering is the exec. director. The Ad Council will launch a major national public service advertising campaign designed to promote the important themes of the Bicentennial, cultural understanding, natural resource stewardship, courage and exploration. The campaign will include television, radio, and print public service ads, and will launch nationally in the fall of 2003. Circle of Tribal Advisors American Indians provided the Corps of Discovery with food, shelter, protection, survival skills and guidance for its successful journey to the Pacific Ocean and back. It is the mission of the Tribal Advisors to commemorate and acclaim the contributions and good will of their ancestors to plan for the well-being of future generations. In cooperation with the National Council and its partners, the Circle of Tribal Advisors will promote educational programs that clarify the important role of the tribes, cultural sensitivity and harmony, sustaining stewardship of natural, cultural and historical resources, cultural perpetuation, and protection of sacred sites along the route of the expedition. Circle of State Advisors The Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806 was a major event that shaped the boundaries and the very future of the United States. It is the mission of the Circle of State Bicentennial Advisors to commemorate that journey, re-kindle its spirit of discovery, and acclaim the contributions and goodwill of the native peoples. Circle of Conservation Advisors A media campaign encouraging a public ethic of stewardship and respect for land, rivers, streams, and forests is being planned by the Conservation Advisors. |
