The
first in the P-16+ Service Learning Series was held on December 10,
2001 in Bloomington and was hosted by State Farm Insurance.
Speakers
included: Kathy Havens, State Farm Insurance, Deputy Governor Hazel
Loucks, Terry Pickeral, Education Commission of the States, Kathy Engelken,
Illinois Campus Compact, Nancy Bragg, Illinois State University, Mary
Weaver, Sidney Elementary School, Kim Armstrong, Black Hawk College;
Tashona Marshall, North Central College; Cathy Bissoondial, Glenn Elementary
School and Jane Angelis, Intergenerational Initiative.

- To
brainstorm with members of the media on telling and writing the stories
of P-16+ service learning
- To
bring greater emphasis to citizenship, civility, and civic involvement
through the integration of service into the curriculum at all levels
of education

it possible for students to have a more active role and responsibility
in the education of other students, older and younger (i.e. making
connections between preschool, K-8, high school, community colleges
and universities?

can all levels of our education system work together to educate active

can we tell/write/publicize the story effectively so that educators/students/citizens
will think about adding it to their curriculum?

learning when added to the curriculum. Likewise, volunteerism, internships,
etc. can lead to service learning. Most high schools are doing community
service. There is a great opportunity to link it to service learning.
- The
engaging element of service learning can be viewed as a retention
element
- Involve
different voices to have an active role, thus expanding service learning
- Increase
the civic/citizenship as a reason for service learning
- Acknowledge
that service starts someplace even if it may not be the traditional
way
- Explore
the potential for stronger ties with workforce programs
- Highlight
the researcher and include service learning in the research
- Advocate
for public policies in place with time and money
- Develop
a three-stage professional development program for educators with
credits attached
- Involve
teacher educators
- Prepare
periodic press releases on service learning
