Welcome to ORDA
A unit of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Dean, ORDA is the University agency for submitting grant proposals and accepting grant awards. We facilitate research and sponsored project activities at SIUC, administer internal grant programs, and oversee technology transfer.
We are located on the 2nd floor of Woody Hall C Wing, 618-453-4540, orda@siu.edu. See About ORDA and our FAQ for an orientation to our office. To find information on our site quickly, check the site index. For an overview of research and sponsored projects at SIUC, see the Research Profile.
What's New...
- Faculty: Please tell interested freshmen about SIUC's newest program to promote undergraduate research: the Saluki Research Rookies Program (SRRP). The purpose is to engage freshmen in faculty-mentored research projects to take place in spring semester 2009. Participation in an undergraduate research experience enhances students' academic preparation, socialization to college, and personal growth. We encourage interested freshmen to apply. More information and downloadable applications are available, or contact Julia Spears (jspears@siu.edu, 453-4585.
- The deadline for the Faculty Seed Grant program is Monday, November 10, 2008. [Information and application materials]. See our workshops listing (next item) for the dates and times of sessions that will help faculty learn how to write competitive proposals for this program (the same session will be offered twice to accommodate faculty schedules). The seed grant program is particularly geared to new faculty. Note: The maximum funding amount has been raised this year to $25,000. The initial application revision gave the old amount; the application has now been corrected and notices to that effect have been sent to departments.
- ORDA has scheduled a number of workshops for the fall semester, including our annual new faculty orientation to ORDA's research services (this will be offered twice more, on Sept. 2 and on Sept. 3), faculty seed grant workshop, research compliances workshop, proposal writing for graduate students workshop, intellectual property workshops, and more. See the full listing.
- The National Science Foundation has established a Research Terms and Conditions web page that consolidates and organizes the new administrative requirements and related documents for federal agencies: http://nsf.gov:80/bfa/dias/policy/rtc/index.jsp.
- New F&A (indirect) cost rates have been set for SIUC effective July 1, 2008, and running through June 30, 2012. Details... The difference is a 1 percentage point increase in the rate for on-campus research and training/instruction projects. Other rates will remain the same.
- As a result of the new F&A agreement, fringe benefits on grant projects will now be calculated as a percentage of salary. Details... This change will, in many cases, lower the amount of money that grants must budget for fringe benefits.
- Graduate assistantship stipend rates for FY2009 and FY2010 have been posted for proposal budgeting purposes. Principal investigators will also need to budget in a percentage of the Primary Care Fee in FY2009 and FY2010. See details. Multiple-year grants may be grandfathered in if the PI can show that he/she does not have sufficient grant funds to cover the increase for the upcoming years.
- We have updated our Grants.gov guidelines page to reflect recent changes. Grants.gov's Applicant Help page has lots of helpful resources, including a FAQs page and a user guide. Principal investigators do not need to register with Grants.gov; ORDA is registered as the Authorized Institutional Representative. However, some individual agencies have their own grant systems that interface with Grants.gov, and you may need to register with these. Read the program guidelines carefully, and if in doubt, check with ORDA.
