Welcome to ORDA

A unit of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Dean, ORDA is the University agency for submitting grant proposals and accepting grant awards. We facilitate research and sponsored project activities at SIUC, administer internal grant programs, and oversee technology transfer.

We are located on the 2nd floor of Woody Hall C Wing, 618-453-4540, orda@siu.edu. See About ORDA and our FAQ for an orientation to our office. To find information on our site quickly, check the site index. For an overview of research and sponsored projects at SIUC, see the Research Profile.

  • The Council for Graduate Schools has announced a new best practice initiative, the Project for Scholarly Integrity. CGS considers research integrity to be one of the most pressing issues facing graduate education today. Changes confront us from all directions from advances in technology and the globalization of research to more fluid borders between academic and non-academic sectors. As we all know, these changes bring new opportunities. But they also bring new risks and ethical challenges. One of the assumptions of the Project for Scholarly Integrity is that we must better prepare students to confront those challenges with professionalism and confidence.

Starting in January, over a three-month period, CGS convened a planning committee of graduate deans to brainstorm on the essential components of a comprehensive institutional approach to research integrity. The results of these discussions are captured in a document that provides a framework for the project and for the institutional activities that it will support: The Project for Scholarly Integrity: A Framework for Collaborative Action. A request for proposals is available on the CGS website. Please contact Project Director Daniel Denecke (ddenecke@cgs.nche.edu; 202-461-3868) for more information about this exciting opportunity.

  • New F&A (indirect) cost rates have been set for SIUC effective July 1, 2008 and running through June 30, 2012. Details... The difference is a 1 percentage point increase in the rate for on-campus research and training/instruction projects. Other rates will remain the same.
  • As a result of the new F&A agreement, fringe benefits on grant projects will now be calculated as a percentage of salary. Details... This change will, in many cases, lower the amount of money that grants must budget for fringe benefits.
  • The Interdisciplinary Research Seed Grant Program will be offered for FY2008. The deadline for proposals is May 19. Details...
  • Congratulations to recipients of the 2008 Faculty Seed Grants. Congratulations also to recipients of the 2008-09 Undergraduate Research/Creative Activity Awards, made under the auspices of REACH. Finally, a round of applause to all participants in the 7th annual Undergraduate Research Forum held on March 31 and to the students with winning posters at that event.
  • Graduate assistantship stipend rates for FY2008, FY2009, and FY2010 have been posted for proposal budgeting purposes. Principal investigators will also need to budget in a percentage of the Primary Care Fee in FY2009 and FY2010. See details. Multiple-year grants may be grandfathered in if the PI can show that he/she does not have sufficient grant funds to cover the increase for the upcoming years.
  • We have updated our Grants.gov guidelines page to reflect recent changes. Grants.gov's Applicant Help page has lots of helpful resources, including a FAQs page and a user guide. Principal investigators do not need to register with Grants.gov; ORDA is registered as the Authorized Institutional Representative. However, some individual agencies have their own grant systems that interface with Grants.gov, and you may need to register with these. Read the program guidelines carefully, and if in doubt, check with ORDA.
