ResearchOur strengths in the sciences and social sciences include many areas of environmental and energy research, materials science, agricultural biotechnology, biomedical research, and cognitive science. Much work in these and other areas is spearheaded by interdisciplinary research centers.

Strengths in the arts and humanities encompass fields as diverse as American philosophy, creative writing, documentary filmmaking, finance, and rehabilitation. We also carry out novel grant-funded outreach projects in education, rural health, and social work that benefit Illinois residents.

The University has a thriving technology transfer program to patent and license technologies. Our affiliated Southern Illinois Research Park hosts high-tech startup businesses, moving inventions from the lab to the marketplace.
