Travel Support Program

arrow iconGeneral Information

Research and dissemination of scholarly and artistic achievements provide professional development opportunities to faculty and students, bring distinction to SIUC, and are central to the University's research mission. In support of these activities, and with the assistance of the Office of the Provost and the SIU Foundation, the Vice Chancellor for Research & Graduate Dean is pleased to make travel funds available to faculty and students.

arrow iconPurpose of Travel

Generally, awards will be made to individuals to:

  • Attend meetings of international or national significance to give invited presentations of major significance, or to act in other important official capacities (organizer, discussant, elected officer of organization, etc.).
  • Travel to an off-campus site that presents unique or one-time research opportunities or collaborations available only under a limited set of circumstances. The application must describe the significance and uniqueness of the opportunity and its impact on the applicant's scholarly growth.
  • Visit program officials at funding agencies where such visits can have a major impact on securing funding for such things as: new, highly visible programs, centers, interdisciplinary initiatives, on-campus conferences, long-term projects, and so forth.

Eligibility:  Preference will be given to tenured and tenure-track faculty or those with regular graduate faculty status.

Amounts: Up to $500 for international travel; up to $400 for travel within the United States or Canada. The OVCR commitment generally will not exceed the commitments from other units.

Graduate Students:

Eligibility: Graduate students must be registered on campus during the times of application and travel; must be full time; and must be in good standing, making satisfactory progress, in their programs.

Amounts:  Up to $300 for international travel; up to $100 for travel within the United States or Canada.

Travel to an off-campus research site may NOT be to the primary thesis or dissertation research site(s).

Applications MUST be accompanied by a letter from the student's primary advisor verifying the significance of the travel to the student's professional development and indicating satisfactory progress toward degree.

Undergraduate Students:

Research-related travel funding may be made available to exceptional undergraduate students for the same purposes and under conditions and circumstances similar to those outlined for awards for graduate students.  Two letters supporting the student's application, one from the department chair and one from another faculty member, will be required.
