I am interested in the socio-cultural implications of postdisaster reconstruction policy and practice. My previous research focused on the resettlement of 4,000 people in Southern Honduras after Hurricane Mitch in a community known as Limon de la Cerca. This study demonstrated how implicit assumptions about the nature of people and society in reconstruction policy and practice had the effect of aggravating the effects of Hurricane Mitch on many disaster survivors. |

| I am currently conducting
an ethnography of recovery planning in the city of New Orleans after
Hurricane Katrina. This research maintains an interest in the political
economic context in which participatory planning takes place, the
kinds of cultural production that accompany such “democratic” processes,
and the strategies that city residents and emerging constituencies
are devising to access the political spaces where decisions that
affect their neighborhoods are made. |
