•   The Department has lost another of its retired faculty members. Professor emeritus Philip J. C. Dark, 89, died of heart failure on April 4, 2008 in St Mawes, Cornwall, England.
•   Prof. Susan M. Ford, Chair of the Anthropology Department, has recently been named as this year's recipient of the Undergraduate Mentor Award by Sigma Xi. An awards ceremoney and banquet will be held sometime in April.
•  The Department is sad to report the death on Feb. 19, 2008 of Dr. M. Lionel Bender, retired professor and past chair of the department. An obituary of his work and publications is available at here.
•   Prof. Izumi Shimada is the new SIUC Outstanding Scholar. Dr. Shimada joins our prestigious list of past recipients of this award, including Jerome Handler, George Gumerman, Robert Corruccini, and Prudence Rice.
•   Dan Bauer was named Outstanding Graduate Assistant in the Core Curriculum for 2007. Dan is the third of our graduate students to receive this award, following William Duncan and Chip Perkins.
•   Anthropology student, David Goldstein, won the SIUC Outstanding Dissertation Award in 2008. Other Anthropology students who have won the SIUC Outstanding Dissertation Award are: Bruce Masse 1989, Liming Zhou, 1997; Warren Anderson, 1998; Penelope McLorg, 2000; Tim Pugh, 2001; Keith Prufer, 2002; Ron Rich, 2003, Kevin Schwartz, (Honorable Mention) 2004, Matthew A. Tornow 2006.
•   SIUC Outstanding MA Thesis Award recipient: Haagen Klaus, 2003
