Research interests Courses
I am interested in primate ecology, behaviour, and cognition, with the specific aim of using ape models to understand human evolution. My empirical work focuses on a large community of white-handed gibbons at Khao Yai National Park, Thailand, which has been subject to longitudinal research for nearly three decades. In a 'holistic' approach I study various aspects of gibbons together with students and colleagues. Our current research centres around the gibbon mating system, life history and demography and more specifically the influence of ecology on reproductive parameters and social organization, the relationship between female ovarian cycles, sexual swellings and mating behaviour, and gibbon vocal communication. I am fascinated by studies of primate culture and cognition, which I aim to soon explore also in gibbons.   Fall 2006
