CURRENT RESEARCH

Proyecto Peten Noroccidente - Hixwitz, Guatemala. - www.jaguarhill.com

For over twenty years the name Hixwitz, or "Jaguar Hill", has been recognized
in ancient Maya texts.  Until recently this name was thought to refer to a single,
undiscovered site located alone the usumacinta River, near the ruined cities like
Piedras Negras and Yaxchilan.  It is now known that Hixwitz (pron. heesh-weets)
was the name of a kingdom comprised of a number of sites in the northwestern Peten,
with likely political centers at the largest-if academically obscure-sites of Zapote Bobal
and El Pajaral.  This discovery, combined with the absence of major fieldwork in this
region of northwestern Peten, has prompted the creation of a new project, the Proyecto
Peten Noroccidente-Hixwitz.  Proyecto Peten Noroccidente (PPN) is a long-term
international effort by U.S., Gualemalan, and French investigators to understand
ancient Maya State formation and development.
