"Agonistic Shopping"

Shoppers compete over merchandise in a frenzied search for bargains. In this instance it is a vegetable seller who is besieged. Well known for superior produce and low prices, his fruit truck was a weekly meeting-place where neighborhood women could share news and engage in friendly hostilities for the best tomatoes.

These images are further described in Remembrance of Repasts: An Anthropology of Food and Memory as "agonistic shopping."
