The
Interior Design program offers a four-year curriculum culminating in a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Interior Design. It is one of two
baccalaureate programs at a public institution in the State of Illinois
accredited by the Council for Interior Design Education (CIDA, formerly
FIDER). The program is dynamic in its response to the demands and
standards of qualification of the profession and its related fields.
Students receive a comprehensive, interdisciplinary
education in preparation for design and administrative
positions in the fields of residential, commercial, and
contract design. The successful degree candidate is
qualified to practice professionally as a member of an
interior design/space planning firm, for
architectural/engineering firms as the interior designer
or interior design team member; or as a facilities
planning consultant, independently or within the
structure of corporations, institutions, or governmental
agencies. Employment opportunities also exist within the
areas of industrial design, product sales, and facilities
management.
The approach toward interior design education, as
taught at SIUC, is within the context of architecture
where, for a well-rounded background, components relative
to the interior environment are emphasized. At the core
of the required course work are classes and studios which
provide knowledge of design and the design process which
includes marketing, programming, schematic design, design
development, construction documents, construction
management, project occupancy, and post-occupancy
evaluation. Support courses to complement and enhance the
core consist of instruction in presentation, furniture,
materials and finishes, interior design history,
lighting, HVAC systems, plumbing, acoustics, and current
professional topics and practice.
The recommended sequence of major course requirements is found on the
Curriculum Guides page. Core Curriculum course requirements must also be
met per University and program regulations. A three-year
option is also available for transfer students who have
completed Core Curriculum courses.
