Interior Design Some
Important Facts about the SIUC Program

Degree: A four-year curriculum is
offered resulting in a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. The
combined coursework provides a comprehensive technical emphasis as a basic
for creative problem solving.
Accreditation: The Interior Design
program at SIUC holds First Professional Degree accreditation by the
Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). Graduates who complete
a two-year work experience under the supervision of a licensed interior
designer are eligible to take the state examination to qualify for use of
the title "Interior Designer."
Qualification: Interior Design in the
State of Illinois is regulated under the "Interior Design Title Act."
Individuals who represent themselves as interior designers must
successfully complete a combination of education, experience, and
examination as dictated by state law.
Employment Opportunities: Students are
prepared for design and administrative positions in the fields of
residential, commercial, and contract design. The successful candidate is
qualified to practice professionally in a wide range of positions with
interior and architecture firms, corporations, government agencies, or
independently.
Where the Jobs Are: Graduates of the
program currently hold positions throughout the United States. A
significant number of international graduates have also found employment
in their home countries ranging from Iceland to Japan. Typically,
openings are more readily available in larger metropolitan areas. Many
alumni have, however, found employment in less populous areas. Success is
dependent on the development of individual talents, motivation, and a
willingness to locate to areas of growth or renovation. A typical annual
entry-level salary range is $30,000 to $35,000. With five years of
experience, licensed Interior Designers can expect to be making in excess
of $45,000 to $50,000 and partners in firms can expect to earn $80,000 or
more.
