Welcome to Naval Base Coronado: San Diego, CA

This will provide some general information regarding your teaching assignment in San Diego. You will receive a detailed letter, specific to your course and class dates.

Transportation

San Diego International Airport, Lindbergh Field (SAN) is the usual arrival point. You will need to rent a car at the airport; there are many choices on site with free shuttle service to the lots. Reserve your car early, San Diego is a popular tourist destination.

Getting Here

From the airport follow the signs to downtown, go east on North Harbor Drive. Turn left onto Grape Street, take I-5 South, exit to Coronado CA-75 S. Turn left onto Orange Avenue; continue through town past the Hotel Del Coronado. Orange Avenue becomes the Silver Strand; continue to the Naval Amphibious Base. Take a left to enter the main gate of NAB.

Base Access

Security for Naval Air Station North Island and Naval Amphibious is highly regulated. Currently all instructors need to obtain a temporary pass and badge from the Pass and Decal office at NAS North Island before 3:00 PM on Friday afternoon. Please note that classes are held at Naval Amphibious Base but the pass must be obtained at NAS North Island. If your arrival time does not allow you to get a base pass please contact the SIU office ahead of time. Either the program advisor or the class liaison will need to escort you onto the base.

All trash must be removed from the classroom at the end of each weekend.

Class Materials

All syllabi and materials for the class must be provided by the instructor. All duplication must be done prior to beginning of the class. The local SIU office does not have the capability to provide duplication services. All materials may be duplicated on campus and sent to the base office. Please provide your materials to Pat Phillips six weeks prior to the class start date. Syllabi should be available to the students three weeks prior to the start date of class. Instructors are encouraged to make their syllabi available to the students via the web site or by email attachment.

Lodging

San Diego is a very expensive location and the hotels rate can be extremely high, especially in the summer months. We are unable to negotiate a constant rate with the local hotels. We suggest you check the Internet at www.Hotelsonline.com, www.hotels.com, www.Travelocity.com, and/or www.Orbitz.com; each provides comparative hotel prices for the Coronado/ San Diego area.
