SIUC ATEP at a Glance
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP), housed in the Department of Kinesiology, is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). It is intended for students who are interested in working in high school, college, or university athletics or sports programs, professional sports, sports medicine & rehabilitation clinics, fitness centers, or private industry. There are two phases of the Athletic Training Education Program: the Pre-Athletic Training Program and the Athletic Training Education Program Professional Phase. Incoming freshman students and most transfer students are required to complete the Pre-Athletic Training Program prior to making application to the Athletic Training Education Program Professional Phase. The Pre-Athletic Training Program is designed to provide students with an overview of the field of athletic training. Students are required to complete a series of courses and participate in clinical observation experience in addition to other requirements prior to application. Upon completion of the Pre-Athletic Training Program, students may then apply for admission into the Professional Phase of the Athletic Training Education Program. Transfer students who have completed an equivalent experience at a junior college or a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Education Program may be eligible to forego the Pre-Athletic Training Program; however, students may transfer in no more than two ATEP courses which are subject to intense review. Any deficiencies between the course completed and the equivalent course at SIUC must be rectified before credit toward graduation will be awarded. Contact the ATEP Director for further details.
