1992 AWARD WINNING INVENTION

1992 Award Winning Invention There is a convention between The President of America and The President of Japan. They are talking about economic and social problems. The President of America ate a lot of food before he went to the convention so, he got a stomachache. Suddenly, he farted in front a lot of people. His fart smelled so bad, and it was very loud. In my opinion, this is another problem besides economic and social problems. Now, I would like to tell you about my invention. My secret is magic layers. Magic layers are used for changing a putrid fart to a fragrant fart. I will stick the magic layers into special underwear. There are two different kinds of layers.

Mission one is to prevent a putrid fart from going through to the next layer, so the first layer is the prevention layer. This layer is an important part because it will prevent a putrid fart from going through the other layer. How does it work? This layer uses a special kind of cotton. Regular cotton has a lot of room so the air will go through the cotton easily. So, I invented a new type of cotton that has a tighter center which can prevent a putrid fart from going through this layer. Mission one is completed.

Mission two is to make the fart smell good, so the second layer is the perfume layer. This is the last layer. This layer will make the air fragrant. How does it work? This layer is special (I really like this layer). The procedure is easy, just use regular cotton and spray a specific perfume into the cotton. After mission one is completed, the air will go to the perfume layer. This layer will make the air fragrant. The second mission is now totally complete. I would like to present the magic layers process so you may understand how it works.

Now, I would like to tell you how to stick the magic layers into the underwear. We have to use a special kind of underwear. The underwear must have velcro. You can stick the magic layer into your special underwear. In my opinion this process is very comfortable because you can recycle magic layers. So, after you use one you can stick another into your underwear and use them regularly.

Magic layers will solve your problem so you may fart as much as you want. It doesn't matter because your putrid fart will become a fragrant fart. Everybody can use it because it is inexpensive, costing about two dollars per dozen, and the underwear costs about three dollars each for regular and six dollars each for high quality underwear. You also can choose the perfume that you like, for example, Calvin Klein, Guess, and so on. I'm very proud because my invention may solve The American President's problem.

AMERICAN AND KOREAN CLOTHES

I have already lived in Carbondale for three weeks. During that time, I have felt that there are many different things between Americans and Koreans.hanbok One that is very noticable is clothes.

Amerians like to wear casual wear especially jeans. In America, from young children to old people, most people are used to wearing jeans. And even if most all of them wear jeans, they don't wear the same brand, style, or color. They seem to pursue only convinient styles and want to wear the clothes that best become them.

Unlike Americans, Koreans like to wear formal wear and they want to follow fashion. There are many special styles. For example, this winter red burberry, long boots, and the bob hair style are in vogue. Most Koreans are much alike in their appearance and they want to be. If they are not, they feel some isolation.

At first, I think it is because the American society consists of many people who have different styles. But I think the most important thing is that the difference between Americans and Koreans is caused by what they value. In other words, Americans emphasize individuality and Koreans, group. In conclusion, I cannot say which one is right and which one is wrong. But only one thing is clear, I feel more freedom in clothes here than in Korea.

AMERICAN FOOD

The United States is made of people from many countries. This country has a variety of food and many kinds of dishes. I will focus on three things, supermarkets, fast food, and spices.

There are many kinds of food in supermarkets in the United States. In the American supermarkets, people can buy almost every food that they need. Customers can get vegetables, spices, even another country's food.

American young people like fast food. For example, they prefer to eat hamburgers, hotdogsandwiches, hot dogs, and pizza for breakfast or lunch. I like fast food, too.

In the American supermarkets, they have many kinds of spices. Especially popular American spices are ketchup, salt, and pepper. Americans like using ketchup, salt, and pepper in their food. They also use cheese and mayonnaise in their food. I usually use salt and pepper, too. But, I don't like ketchup because ketchup tastes too strong, so food lose their original natural taste by adding ketchup.

As a result, there are many kinds of food in the United States. So you can easily eat any kind of food with your favorite spices. If people from another country come to the United States, they will not miss their favorite food. To know food may be one way to know about the culture. I think American food is very wonderful.

CARBONDALE

I like Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I have lived in Carbondale and studied English in CESL for over 20 months.cdale while studying English at Carbondale, I have met a lot of kind, helpful, and beautiful teachers, and friends.

I have had very good experiences in Carbondale despite the fact that the class curriculum is very hard for me.

By the way, I met with both my parents a few weeks ago. They came from Japan to visit me for 5 days. I hadn't seen them for one and a half years, so we were very happy to meet and see each other. But, when they left they told me that I must finish English school by May of this year. So now, I'm looking for a 2 year or 4 year college to study general education. It might be the best way for me.

In March and April, I will take an international TOEFL examination. I want to a get good score so I can enter a 2 year or 4 year college.

So, this spring semester might be my final semester. I expect to concentrate on the class work and the TOEFL, and have a very nice experience in Carbondale. Thanks.

COMPARING U.S RESTAURANTS WITH KOREAN RESTAURANTS

When American people are asked about the people in their own country, many of them say " Tastes differ ." There are many kinds of people in this world and they have their own lifestyles and cultures. Though I only came to America a few weeks ago, I have already had precious experiences about the different lifestyle and culture in America. The precious experience is the difference between Korean restaurants and American restaurants. Comparing American restaurants with Korean restaurants, I have come to realize the difference in cultural characters between the two nations. I think Koreans standardize their restaurants, but Americans respect the idea that "tastes differ."

When we want soup with mixed sea food, in Korean restaurants, we can say "Soup with mixed with sea food please." That is everything. If you say "I want five red peppers, many mussels and lobsters from the east sea, some bean-sprouts and please don't open the cover," you will be treated like you are stupid. But Americans order something to eat in detail. So, it takes a lot of time to order. Waitress must write it, down and give it to the cook. If we sit down at a table in an American restaurant, we are first asked "Any drinks?" We can then drink some juice or coffee. The next time, it's time to order food. We choose a soup and then if they ask what kind of salad we want, we can have salad. And now, it's time to choose the main course. There are many choices as well as " Today's special." If you want steak, you are asked "How do you like your steak done" and surely you are asked "Do you want any toppings on your steak." Finally they tell you the kinds of desert available today. And then the order is over. I don't like this complicated ordering because I am poor at English. So, I scarcely go to a place like a steak house. I'd rather go to McDonald's; I order the set menu like "No. 1," "No. 2."

I can infer the characteristic lifestyle of Americans by eating a meal at a restaurant. I don't think they like standardized life very much. This is the result of America consisting of many human races. They respect individual ability and one's personal taste. Besides, Americans pursue the idea of individuality.
