English for Academic Purposes - Ideas

The EAP class pages have been remodeled as the EAP1 Students' Page and the EAP2 Students' Page.

The following are ideas for upper-level ESL classes to pursue in finding topics to research, discuss and write about.
Not all of our topics have been listed here. The page is also used to store old links from EAP2 writing classes.

[ Interactivity ][ Environment ]

Wikipedia

This class used this exercise to write essays, drawing upon sources, about whether students should be taught to use Wikipedia as a reference. This presented the issue directly, gave students either option, and set out the requirements for the essay; most of these ended up on the web, seen in the weblogs of 082 students in the template of the class weblog.

Interactivity

Our high-level classes have enjoyed discussing this issue, starting with the following questions:
  • Are video games good for people? In what ways?
  • In what ways can we integrate interactivity into language education?

  • LINKS:

    Environment

Our EAP2 (highest level) classes have done environmental themes for many years. We pick an area, find a problem or issue, and write about the social and economic factors influencing that issue. For example, one might research grizzly bears: their problems, the reasons they are threatened, and what people in the west can do to protect and preserve their habitats. Though some of the links from these pages may be outdated, you may also find connections that will help you do the same thing.

    Old class-page links:
(hint: 033, for example, is literally the third term, or May-July, of 2003...this will give you an example of how dated these are; they are presently being cleaned out)
